Monastery Marienberg

Highest Benedictine abbey in Europe

The Benedictine monastery Marienberg (1.340 m) above Burgeis was founded by the counts of Tarasp from Engadin. For more than 800 years the monks have been living here after the rules of the Holy Benedict.

The monastery was built around 1200. The baroque collegiate church is the only pillar basilica with 3 aisles in the Vinschgau Valley. Furthermore there is the only impressive stone figure "Mary with child", the fresco next to the entrace from the 14th century and the frescos in the chapel.

The crypt from 1156 has Romaneque frescos with Byzantine influence. Nowadays it can't be visited anymore. It is used for prayers only.

The museum of the monastery is situated in the former working quarters of the monastery. You will get an insight into the monks' lives that were living and still live after the principle of "ora et labora". Furthermore you will get to know more about historic events as well as the Romanesque Crypt with its frescos.
