Castle Churburg 

a jewel in South Tyrol 

Above Schluderns there is one of the mightiest and best-preserved castle complexes: the Churburg.

The castle was built around the year 1250 by the count of Chur, Heinrich von Montford. Already in the year 1297 the complexe belonged to the Counts of Matsch.

In 1504, after the death of one of the Counts of Matsch, the castle buildungs became the Counts Trapp's property. In the year 1537 the castle became the Counts Trapp's property once and for all, and it is still today.

The grounds

The centre of the castle consists of a very strong keep, the palace and a ring wall. Around the centre there are some outer wards, gates, towers, a Romaneque chapel and a park. The castle, which has never been destroyed, has a lot of rooms with panelling, paintings and tiled stoves, as well as a library.

The loggia

The arcades in the loggia were decorated with valuable mural paintings in the 16th century.

The armoury

It is the world's biggest private armoury and it has has almost complete equipments for a whole garrison. All in all there are more than 50 complete armours, swords and other weapons.
The most striking armour is 2.10 metres high and it is from the time around 1450. The more than 40 kilograms heavy armour was made by the Milanese armourer Missaglia. The armour belonged to Ulrich von Matsch once.
